Colombia President De la Espriella blames Petro for fiscal crisis
Colombian President Abelardo De la Espriella has declared the nation's economic situation an 'apocalyptic crisis,' attributing the fiscal deterioration exclusively to the previous administration of Gustavo Petro. In a recent presidential address, De la Espriella claimed the former government engaged in waste and corruption, noting that the 2026 debt quota was nearly 97% exhausted by August.
The proposed 2027 National General Budget is approximately 634.9 trillion pesos. A significant portion of this budget—44%, or 281 trillion pesos—is sourced from debt. De la Espriella noted that debt service has doubled over the last decade, now consuming nearly one-third of tax revenue. To address the deficit, the administration has announced austerity measures aiming for 17.4 trillion pesos in savings, including cuts to non-priority investment projects and government procurement.
The Autonomous Committee for Fiscal Rules (CARF) has emphasized the urgency of implementing a convincing fiscal consolidation strategy to stabilize debt. CARF reported that debt service grew by 54.7%, increasing its share of the GDP by 2.3 percentage points. The current administration aims to use these adjustments to restore private investment and economic growth.
