Paraguay and Turkey engage in beverage trade expansion
Paraguay is actively seeking to expand its yerba mate market by targeting Turkey and Azerbaijan. Following a commercial mission supported by the Paraguayan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives are working to establish trade channels in regions with strong infusion consumption traditions. This move aims to address domestic surplus, as national production is estimated between 45 and 50 million kilograms annually.
Simultaneously, Turkey’s tea export sector has reported significant growth. According to data from the Eastern Black Sea Exporters Association, Turkish tea exports reached over $25 million in the first nine months of 2026, spanning 119 countries and regions. Major destinations include the United Kingdom, Belgium, and the United States. The city of Rize remains a central hub, accounting for 37% of the total export value.
Paraguayan officials view Turkey as a strategic gateway to broader markets in the Middle East and Central Asia. They are leveraging tax advantages for yerba mate entering the Turkish market to position the product as a viable alternative to traditional black tea.
