Paraguayan biochemists confirm national strike for October 26

The Union of Biochemists of Paraguay has confirmed a national strike scheduled for October 26, 27, and 28, 2026, following the failure of tripartite negotiations with health authorities. The labor action is expected to involve 163 laboratories across the Ministry of Public Health, the Social Security Institute (IPS), academic institutions, and teaching sectors.

Key demands from the union include a salary adjustment, noting that wages have been frozen for 14 years. Professionals reported that net salaries for contracted staff barely exceed the legal minimum wage, despite requiring six years of university education and specialized training. Other demands include the continuous appointment of new professionals, improved availability of basic supplies and reagents, and increased staffing to ensure 24-hour laboratory coverage in public hospitals.

During the strike, laboratories will not process samples or receive orders for outpatient patients. However, services for emergencies, intensive care, and inpatient units will remain operational. The union has advised patients to reschedule or advance their routine studies to avoid disruptions.
