San Ignacio Guazú declared “Cradle of Football” by Paraguay lawmakers

The Paraguayan Chamber of Deputies approved a project designating San Ignacio Guazú, in the Misiones department, as the “Ciudad Cuna del Balompié” (Cradle of Football). The proposal, presented by deputies Carlos María Arrechea (ANR) and Arnaldo Valdez (PLRA), cites 18th‑century Jesuit records describing indigenous ball games played with the feet, predating modern European football.

In Argentina, a separate legislative initiative led by Carolina Streitenberger (Juntos por Entre Ríos) seeks to name national‑team defenders Lisandro Martínez and Marcos Senesi as “Ciudadanos Ilustres” of Entre Ríos. The motion praises their representation of the province and Argentina, stating that “their presence … is a source of deep pride for Entre Ríos.” Both actions aim to honor football’s cultural and sporting contributions in their respective regions.
