Paraguay summons Brazil's ambassador over Lula's Triple Alliance comment
President Luiz Inácio Lula referenced the 19th‑century War of the Triple Alliance in a defence‑investment speech in Jacareí, saying that Paraguay once invaded Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. The remark was criticised by Paraguay as a distortion of history.
Paraguayan Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano summoned Brazilian Ambassador José Antonio Marcondes for a meeting on 31 July. The Paraguayan Chamber of Deputies adopted a unanimous declaration repudiating Lula’s comments, accusing him of minimizing the war’s impact and demanding the return of the “El Cristiano” cannon and other war trophies. President Santiago Peña spoke by phone with Lula about the issue, which the two foreign ministers also discussed in Lima, Peru. Brazil’s Planalto Palace chose not to issue a public response.
The War of the Triple Alliance (1864‑1870) devastated Paraguay, with estimates that about 70 % of its pre‑war population perished.
