Paraguay medical strike enters fifth day amid resignation threats
Public health workers in Paraguay are entering the fifth day of a national strike, marked by escalating tensions and threats of mass resignations. Medical professionals and students from the Universidad Nacional de Asunción have held demonstrations in Asunción, Encarnación, and Ciudad del Este to demand salary readjustments, better working conditions, and the stabilization of temporary contracts.
The Sociedad Paraguaya de Cirugía Pediátrica has warned that 39 pediatric surgeons intend to formalize their resignations on Monday if the government fails to reach an agreement. Protesters also highlighted a critical shortage of essential medicines and medical supplies, which they claim is endangering patient lives.
In Ciudad del Este, tensions rose when National Police officers reportedly fired rubber bullets into the air to disperse demonstrators attempting to march toward the Friendship International Bridge. Meanwhile, in the capital, protesters used symbolic imagery, including carrying human body allegories and burning an effigy of President Santiago Peña, to illustrate the state of the healthcare system.
Government officials have expressed resistance to the demands. Basilio Bachi Núñez, President of the National Congress, noted that the requested USD 150 million for salary increases cannot be approved immediately.
