Paraguayan governors clash with legislators over political influence

Political tensions are rising in Paraguay between departmental governors and national legislators. Guairá Governor César Sosa criticized Central Governor Ricardo Estigarribia for suggesting that support for President Santiago Peña is tied to the management of the ‘Hambre Cero’ program. Sosa dismissed these claims, stating that political differences should not be reduced to budgetary matters and defended the established relationship between governors and the Executive.

Separately, Caaguazú Governor Marcelo Soto responded to accusations made by Senator Carlos Núñez, who referred to governors as ‘thieves.’ Soto argued that senators attacking departmental leaders do so because they feel threatened by the governors' operational territorial leadership. He characterized this confrontational political style as an outdated and perverse mechanism that lacks citizen support.
