Paraguayan political leaders propose 2028 election lineups

Political movements within Paraguay's ruling Colorado Party are defining their leadership strategies for the 2028 elections. Basilio Núñez, President of the Senate, revealed a proposal to have Horacio Cartes lead the Honor Colorado movement's senatorial list. Núñez stated that having Cartes at the head of the list would aim to secure an absolute majority for the party. Cartes has reportedly requested time to consider the proposal.

Núñez noted that the initiative seeks to rectify the outcome of the 2018 elections, where Cartes was elected as a senator but was prevented from taking his seat by a majority in the Senate. Núñez characterized that previous event as a violation of the will of over 500,000 voters.

In a separate development regarding the 2028 electoral slate, Senator Antonio Barrios confirmed that Minister of Urbanism, Housing, and Habitat Juan Carlos Baruja has been chosen to run alongside Pedro Alliana. Barrios dismissed rumors of internal divisions within the ruling movement, asserting that while Raúl Latorre possesses the profile for a presidential bid, he is expected to wait until the 2033 elections.
