Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla mocks Mbappé after France’s World Cup exit

Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla, who earlier faced criticism for racist insults directed at French striker Kylian Mbappé following Paraguay’s round‑of‑16 loss, renewed the controversy after France were eliminated 2‑0 by Spain in the World Cup 2026 semifinals. Appearing in the Senate dressed in Spanish colours, she declared that “karma has arrived for Mbappé, Paraguay’s karma, not just mine.”

Amarilla said she does not fear legal repercussions, noting Paraguay’s parliamentary immunity for statements made in the exercise of her mandate. The French Football Federation lodged a complaint, and the Paris prosecutor’s office opened investigations for public insult on racial grounds and for incitement to hatred. The senator framed the episode as a publicity boost, saying she may defend herself if sued.

The incident has drawn condemnation from the United Nations, French President Emmanuel Macron, and football officials, while highlighting gaps in Paraguay’s anti‑racism legislation.
