Banco Central del Paraguay unveils new guaraní banknote series

The Banco Central del Paraguay (BCP) has unveiled a new family of banknotes to celebrate the 83rd anniversary of the guaraní. This marks the first comprehensive redesign of the nation's currency in over six decades.

The new series maintains the existing six denominations: G. 2,000, G. 5,000, G. 10,000, G. 20,000, G. 50,000, and G. 100,000. To improve accessibility for visually impaired individuals, the banknotes will feature different lengths while maintaining a uniform width. Additionally, the lower denominations (G. 2,000, G. 5,000, and G. 10,000) will be manufactured using polymer to increase durability.

The designs incorporate Paraguayan history, culture, and biodiversity. Featured elements include historical figures, indigenous peoples, and local fauna such as the jaguar and various bird species. Enhanced security features have also been integrated, including relief printing, advanced security threads, watermarks, and optically variable inks to combat counterfeiting.

The transition to the new banknotes will be gradual, starting in the first quarter of 2027. Current banknotes will remain legal tender and continue to circulate alongside the new designs during the phase-in period.
