Paramaribo-Noord residents and authorities address safety and crime concerns
Joint government inspections in Paramaribo and North Suriname have revealed significant safety risks and public nuisances. The Economic Control Service (ECD), alongside the Suriname Police Force and public health bureaus, conducted checks following citizen complaints. Findings included improper waste storage, clogged sewage systems, faulty electrical wiring, and issues with roadside verges.
In response to these systemic issues, residents of Paramaribo-Noord organized a community meeting, known as a ‘birti krutu’, to address local safety and livability. Participants identified illegal construction, street prostitution, drug crime, noise pollution, and gold-buying activities as urgent concerns. The meeting also highlighted the impact of youth crime and the need for better recreational facilities to support local development. Community leader Aristo Kelly emphasized the necessity of cooperation between residents and authorities to implement solutions such as neighborhood watches and local cleanup initiatives.
