Paramaribo removes traffic plateau on Keizerstraat to ease congestion
The traffic plateau at the intersection of Keizerstraat and Zwartenhovenbrugstraat in Paramaribo, Suriname, has been temporarily removed. The measure aims to improve vehicle flow after the removal of a traffic speed bump caused significant bottlenecks at the busy junction.
The change follows increased traffic pressure from ongoing rehabilitation work on Domineestraat and the full closure of Domineestraat, which have forced more vehicles onto alternative routes through the city centre. Police units—including the Motor Surveillance Service, Motor Brigade Paramaribo and the Bikers Unit—have been deployed to monitor the area, guide drivers and keep the flow moving, especially during peak‑hour periods.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution at the intersection, follow police directions, and consider alternative routes such as Fred Derbystraat and the Waterkant to avoid delays. The temporary adjustment is expected to reduce waiting times while the road works continue.
