Paramount Skydance seeks $111 billion merger with Warner Bros. Discovery
Paramount Skydance, owned by Oracle founder Larry Ellison and his son David, is attempting to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) in a merger valued at $111 billion. The proposed deal has faced significant legal and industry opposition.
A coalition of 12 Democratic state attorneys general and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) have challenged the merger in court. Critics, including several prominent Hollywood actors, express concerns that the deal could create a monopoly, leading to job losses, reduced market competition, and higher prices for consumers.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta issued a statement warning that the illegal merger of these two entertainment giants would result in lower quality and less content for film and television, ultimately harming cinemas, cable operators, and the public. There are also concerns regarding the consolidation of news media, as the acquisition could place CNN under the control of the Ellison family alongside HBO and the DC Universe.
