Hospital Angelina Caron doctor charged in deaths of six children

The Public Prosecutor's Office of Paraná has charged a doctor with involuntary manslaughter following the deaths of six children and newborns in the pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) of Hospital Angelina Caron in Campina Grande do Sul.

The investigation alleges that the deaths, which occurred between May and July 2024, were caused by septic shock and multiple organ failure resulting from widespread intra-hospital contamination by multi-resistant bacteria. The prosecutor, Éder Teodorovicz, stated that the doctor, who served as the ICU's technical director, acted with gross technical negligence by failing to oversee basic asepsis and biosafety protocols.

Specific allegations include the reuse of procedure gloves between patients, inadequate handling of intubation tubes and venous access, and a lack of routine hygiene for patients. Hospital Angelina Caron issued a statement noting it had not yet been officially notified of the proceedings and would provide necessary information to the judiciary once formally cited.
