Paraná electricity rates jump 20% amid Brazil's Itaipu bonus relief

Effective 24 June 2026, the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) approved an average 20.51% increase in Copel’s electricity tariffs in Paraná, impacting roughly 5.3 million customers. Residential users see a 20% rise, low‑tension customers about 19.85%, and high‑tension consumers 21.87%. The adjustment follows the periodic tariff review, the largest increase since the 9.89% hike approved in 2021.

The Paraná state government’s Energia Solidária programme continued to cover electricity bills for around 205,000 low‑income families in May, allocating R$20 million for the month and averaging about R$4 million in monthly subsidies.

Separately, Aneel announced a “Itaipu bonus” of R$767.2 million to be credited to residential and rural electricity bills nationwide in August 2026. After setting aside R$524.4 million for a technical reserve, the remaining amount translates to an average credit of roughly R$9.16 per household, applied automatically without any registration required.
