Paraná experiences population growth and rising migration

The state of Paraná is experiencing significant demographic shifts, characterized by both internal migration and rapid urban growth. According to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Paraná saw a net influx of 327,943 new residents from other Brazilian states between the 2010 and 2022 censuses, reversing a previously negative migration balance.

Major cities are the primary recipients of this movement. Curitiba led with 67,007 new residents, followed by Maringá, Londrina, Foz do Iguaçu, and Cascavel. While large urban centers attract the highest absolute numbers, smaller municipalities like Francisco Alves and Carlópolis show high proportional immigration rates.

In the city of Cascavel, population growth has reached 372,026 inhabitants, a 6.9% increase since the 2022 Census. Projections from the Paraná Institute for Economic and Social Development (Ipardes) suggest Cascavel is on track to become the fourth largest city in the state, potentially surpassing Ponta Grossa by 2050. This growth is attributed to improved socioeconomic conditions, security, and quality of life within the state, alongside a trend of migration from small towns to medium-sized urban centers.
