Severe weather and El Niño trigger storms in Brazil and drought warnings in Mozambique FAST-MOVING
Severe weather events have caused significant disruption across Brazil and Mozambique. In Paraná, Brazil, two tornadoes were confirmed within a 24-hour period, striking Francisco Alves and Espigão Alto do Iguaçu. These events, linked to supercells, affected ten municipalities, resulting in damage to 15 houses and impacting 266 people. Heavy rainfall and high winds have also caused flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage in the Vale do Ivaí region.
In Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, recent storms with winds exceeding 80 km/h caused fallen trees, power outages, and structural damage. Local authorities and the state government have mobilized emergency teams to restore services and assist vulnerable populations. Meteorologists warn that the El Niño phenomenon is increasing the risk of continued severe storms, including potential new tornadoes and intense rainfall across the southern region.
In Mozambique, President Daniel Chapo has issued warnings regarding an impending drought linked to El Niño. He urged communities in the central and southern regions, particularly Inhambane, Gaza, and Maputo, to prepare for water scarcity by reinforcing supply systems and preserving agricultural production.
