Paraná health authorities report low blood stocks and highlight bone marrow donation

The Paraná Center of Hematology and Hemotherapy (Hemepar) has issued an alert regarding low blood stocks for types O positive (O+) and O negative (O-). O negative blood is critical for emergency situations and trauma care due to its universal compatibility, while O positive is the most widely demanded type in the Brazilian population.

Hemepar supplies more than 380 public and philanthropic hospitals across the state. To maintain essential services such as oncology treatments, organ transplants, and surgeries, the institution is urging residents to schedule regular donations at one of its 23 collection units.

In related health news, Paraná ranks third nationally in the Brazilian Registry of Voluntary Bone Marrow Donors (Redome), accounting for 10% of the country's total registered donors. Bone marrow transplants are vital for treating leukemia, anemia, and various genetic or autoimmune blood diseases. Potential donors must be between 18 and 35 years old and can register at Hemepar units through a simple blood compatibility test.
