Paraguay and Argentina face severe flooding and storms due to El Niño

Heavy rainfall and rising river levels driven by the El Niño phenomenon are causing widespread flooding across parts of Paraguay and Argentina. In Paraguay, meteorological models predict intense storms and rainfall between 100 and 200 millimeters over a five-day period, particularly affecting the central and southern regions. The Municipality of Asunción has identified critical circulation points and warned citizens to avoid certain areas due to ongoing drainage works and potential flooding.

In Argentina, the Paraná River has reached 27.20 meters in Puerto Iguazú, leading to the closure of ten river crossings. Significant evacuations have been reported in Chaco, where 913 people have left their homes, and in Corrientes, where more than 400 people have been displaced. Additionally, authorities in La Pampa have issued alerts following sudden water releases from the Atuel River in Mendoza, which have raised concerns regarding potential flooding in the western part of the province.
