Brazil highways record 68 deaths during holiday weekend

During the Nossa Senhora Aparecida holiday weekend, the Federal Highway Police (PRF) conducted extensive operations across Brazil, resulting in 68 deaths and 969 injuries across 926 occurrences. The enforcement focused heavily on highways in São Paulo and Pará to assist religious pilgrims.

Law enforcement reported significant criminal activity during the period, including the arrest of 356 individuals and the seizure of 2.2 tons of marijuana and 34 kg of cocaine. The PRF inspected 124,899 people and vehicles. Traffic violations were widespread, with 22,077 vehicles flagged for speeding and 747 drivers cited for drunk driving or refusing breathalyzer tests.

Regional reports varied: in Goiás, the PRF recorded over 4,200 speeding violations and five deaths. In Mato Grosso, five people died in 25 accidents. In Rio Grande do Norte, four deaths were reported alongside the seizure of weapons and explosives. Meanwhile, in Paraná, state highways saw a decrease in total accidents compared to the previous year, though alcohol-related offenses increased.
