Paraná tilapia farm loses 400,000 fish after power outage
A tilapia farm in São João do Ivaí, Paraná, reported the death of between 300,000 and 400,000 fish following a 23-hour power outage. The outage, which began on Tuesday afternoon, was caused by severe storms that damaged the local electrical infrastructure, including 42 broken utility poles.
The farm, operated by Mais Fish, relies on electric equipment to maintain oxygenation in the tanks. The loss is estimated to cost approximately R$ 2 million. The company, which employs about 50 people and produces 800 tons of tilapia annually, is currently working to remove the dead fish from the tanks.
Copel, the regional energy provider, stated that the service interruption was due to heavy rain and winds. The company confirmed that teams were mobilized to repair the network and noted that the client has opened a formal request for compensation. Copel is currently analyzing such requests according to established criteria.
