Paraná's IAT revokes water monitoring ordinance for rural properties

The Paraná Water and Land Institute (IAT) has temporarily revoked Ordinance 707/2026, which mandated frequent hourly and daily water usage measurements for certain surface and groundwater extractions on rural properties.

The suspension follows a joint request from several agricultural and rural development entities, including Sistema FAEP, the State Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply (Seab), IDR-Paraná, Ocepar, and Fetaep. These organizations argued that the strict monitoring requirements were difficult to comply with on the ground and proposed that monthly reporting should serve as the general rule.

Under the revoked ordinance, surface water extractions exceeding 30 cubic meters per hour required daily records with both a hydrometer and a chronometer, or hourly readings if only a hydrometer was present. For groundwater, daily or hourly readings were required for flows exceeding 10 cubic meters per hour. The requesting entities suggested that more intensive monitoring should only be required in critical basins or areas of water conflict, based on technical justification and hydric risk.
