Paraíso do Tocantins declares emergency over water crisis

The municipality of Paraíso do Tocantins has declared a state of emergency due to a severe water crisis caused by drought and irregular supply. Mayor Celso Morais signed Decree No. 1.517/2026, demanding that the concessionaire BRK Ambiental waive water tariffs during the period of intermittent or alternating supply, effective from October 11, 2026, until service is fully normalized.

Simultaneously, the Civil Police of Tocantins has opened a criminal investigation into the water supply situation. The inquiry, led by the 62nd Police Station, aims to investigate reports of recurring rationing and the distribution of water with inadequate characteristics, such as strong odors and turbidity. Authorities are investigating potential water contamination, environmental damage, and consumer rights violations.

Technical experts from the Environmental Engineering and Forensic Nucleus have been tasked with conducting physicochemical and microbiological analyses of water samples collected from treatment stations, main reservoirs, and affected residences to assess potability. The investigation also seeks to identify the water sources being used and evaluate the sanitary conditions of the collection and distribution processes.
