Paraíso do Tocantins water crisis prompts legal action against BRK Ambiental
The Public Ministry of Tocantins (MPTO) has filed a public civil action against the utility company BRK Ambiental to address critical water supply shortages in Paraíso do Tocantins. The legal action seeks to ensure the immediate and free provision of water via water trucks to essential services, including schools and hospitals.
The water crisis, which has persisted since early October due to reduced flow in the Rio do Coco, has forced the suspension or reduction of activities at seven municipal schools. While BRK Ambiental implemented a rotation system to manage the shortage, residents report continued low pressure and prolonged interruptions. The MPTO is also seeking R$ 500,000 in compensation for collective moral damages and demands greater transparency regarding the rotation schedule and the measures being taken to mitigate the impact on the population.
