Paraty and Ilha Grande recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites

Paraty and Ilha Grande, located on the Costa Verde in the state of Rio de Janeiro, constitute Latin America’s first mixed UNESCO World Heritage site. This designation, granted in 2019, recognizes the region for both its cultural and natural significance.

The protected territory covers approximately 150,000 hectares, preserving 85% of the Atlantic Forest and hosting rare endemic plant and bird species. The cultural value is rooted in the presence of traditional communities, including indigenous peoples, quilombolas, fishermen, and artisans who practice sustainable land and sea management.

Key attractions include the Paraty Historic Center, Morro da Vila Velha, Serra da Bocaina National Park, and Ilha Grande State Park. The region is also a hub for cultural events, such as the Paraty International Literary Festival (FLIP) and the Festival da Cachaça. Visitors can access the area via road from Rio de Janeiro, with Ilha Grande requiring a combination of land and sea travel.
