Paraty neighborhoods explored in new book on traditional culture

The new book ‘Parque da Mangueira e Ilha das Cobras: o tradicional na territorialidade contemporânea de Paraty’ explores the cultural formation of two urbanized neighborhoods in Paraty, Rio de Janeiro. Authored by Mírian do Nascimento Machado based on her master's research at the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, the work examines areas that exist outside the city's famous historical center and tourist circuits.

Published by Editora Multifoco, the book details how families from coastal and rural communities brought their traditions, kinship ties, and connections to the land and sea into these urban spaces. The research highlights the presence of ‘caiçara’ culture through community celebrations, traditional food, medicinal plants, and intergenerational memories, showing how these customs have adapted to contemporary urban life to maintain a sense of identity and belonging.
