Parental financial support rises amid rising living costs

Rising costs for housing, food, and utilities have led to an increase in adult children relying on parental financial support, a phenomenon often referred to as the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’.

Data from SpareRoom indicates that over 25% of individuals under the age of 30 have received deposit loans from relatives to assist with renting. Additionally, 19% of this demographic required financial help to meet monthly rent payments. This trend extends into older age groups, with 7% of renters over 40 receiving assistance with rent and 10% requiring deposit loans.

While this support provides essential relief, it can also lead to complex emotional challenges for adults, including feelings of embarrassment, guilt, and a perceived lack of independence despite being employed.
