Germany: Parental child support obligations often continue after age 18
In Germany, reaching the age of 18 does not automatically terminate a parent's obligation to provide child support. According to legal experts from ARAG, the duty to provide support continues as long as the young adult is engaged in schooling, vocational training, or university studies and is not yet able to support themselves financially.
For adult children, the nature of the support obligation changes. While parents of minors often provide support through care and housing, parents of adult children are generally required to provide cash support (Barunterhalt). This obligation applies regardless of whether the parents live together or are separated. In cases of separation, the amount each parent contributes is typically determined by their respective income levels, with higher earners often assuming a larger share of the costs.
