Parental mental health concerns rise amid intensive parenting demands

Recent studies and expert observations suggest that modern parenting has become increasingly complex and psychologically demanding. Parent educator Genevieve Muir, who has worked with 40,000 parents, compares contemporary child-rearing to “learning an entirely new language” compared to previous generations, citing the influence of “intensive parenting” styles that are emotionally absorbing and financially expensive.

Data from the Pew Research Center indicates that 70 per cent of Western parents believe parenting is more difficult than it was two or three decades ago. While concerns for children's mental health remain a primary worry, health officials in both the United States and Australia have issued warnings regarding the psychological state of parents themselves.

A study by the Australian Parenting Research Centre (PRC) found that nearly 60 per cent of 10,000 surveyed parents and carers experienced moderate to high levels of psychological distress, including loneliness and self-doubt. Additionally, research involving the Victorian government and the Minderoo Foundation reported that 57 per cent of parents feel lonely as carers, while many others struggle with guilt and feelings of inadequacy.
