Parental rights and business continuity in Poland

In Poland, parents navigating the transition between childcare and professional responsibilities face different challenges depending on their employment status. While employees can rely on formal parental leave and team coverage, entrepreneurs often face the pressure of maintaining client relations and business continuity personally.

Legal guidance clarifies that being a parent of children with disabilities does not automatically grant a right to reduced statutory working hours. However, under the Labor Code, such parents may request an individual work schedule to better accommodate caregiving needs.

To support working families, the Active Parent Program provides financial assistance of up to 1,500 PLN monthly to help cover nursery costs. This subsidy is available to both employees and self-employed individuals without income thresholds, with potentially higher support available for children with disabilities. Applications are processed through ZUS.
