Parental screen time linked to slower child language development
Research published in JAMA Pediatrics indicates that parental smartphone use may have a more significant impact on a child's language development than the time children spend on screens themselves. A study conducted by the University of Oslo followed 747 Norwegian children from ages five to eight, finding that five-year-olds with personal tablets or mobile phones exhibited weaker language skills. Researchers noted that frequent device use by parents can reduce verbal communication, depriving children of essential vocabulary acquisition during critical developmental stages.
Complementary findings suggest that technology is increasingly intrusive during family interactions. A study involving over 350 parents revealed that more than 75% of parents used some form of media, most commonly smartphones, during their last family meal. Approximately 70% of children aged 4 to 10 were also using devices during these times. Experts, including Cecilia Sada Garibay from the University of Arizona, warn that constant device checking during shared moments can jeopardize parental relationships and diminish the benefits of communal dining, such as improved nutrition and emotional connection.
