Police warn of rising telephone and impersonation scams in Poland
Police are warning of a rise in sophisticated telephone and in-person scams targeting residents in Poland. Criminals are increasingly using emotional manipulation, time pressure, and impersonation to steal life savings.
Common tactics include vishing, where scammers pose as bank employees, police officers, prosecutors, or family members in distress. In one instance, a 68-year-old woman lost 100,000 PLN after being convinced her children needed an HIV vaccine. Other victims have lost significant sums to individuals posing as police officers or bank staff, including a 29-year-old woman who lost 50,000 PLN.
Beyond direct conversation, scammers also use technical methods such as spoofing to fake caller IDs and 'one-ring' scams, where victims are lured into calling back expensive international numbers. Authorities advise the public to remain skeptical of unexpected calls and to verify the identity of anyone requesting money or sensitive information through official channels.
