Child psychology: Avoiding misdiagnosis and emotional projection

Psychologists and experts highlight the importance of distinguishing between normal developmental stages and clinical issues in children and adolescents. A key concern is the tendency for parents to project their own therapeutic insights or adult emotional standards onto their children, which can lead to misdiagnosing routine behaviors—such as tantrums or shyness—as behavioral disorders or social anxiety.

In adolescence, it can be difficult to differentiate between typical hormonal mood swings and the onset of depression. Experts suggest maintaining open communication and monitoring significant changes, such as declining school performance or social withdrawal.

Furthermore, specialists warn against 'emotional parentification,' where children are forced into adult roles by becoming confidants or emotional caregivers for their parents. While sharing minor life stresses can model healthy emotional processing, burdening children with complex adult problems can cause insecurity and alter their identity formation.
