Parenting strategies for supporting adolescent development

Navigating the challenges of parenting teenagers requires a balance of guidance and restraint. Experts suggest that parents can lose their children's respect and trust by being inconsistent with rules or by failing to act as positive role models.

During puberty, adolescents often prioritize friendships and independence over material possessions, which explains why many teenagers may no longer express specific wishes for birthdays. To foster resilience and responsibility, parents are encouraged to allow teenagers to experience the consequences of their own decisions, such as managing pocket money or handling schoolwork, rather than intervening to solve every problem.

Communication also plays a critical role. Certain phrases, such as labeling a teenager as ‘lazy,’ can damage the parent-child relationship. As adolescents seek more autonomy and strive to be treated like adults, maintaining trust through respectful and consistent interaction becomes essential for healthy development.
