Parenting stress linked to increased child screen time
New research from Florida International University suggests that parents' decisions to use digital screens as a tool for children are heavily influenced by the adult's ability to manage stress rather than just the child's behavior.
Managing technology use is a significant burden for families; a 2020 national survey indicated that nearly 70% of parents view managing a child's social media and technology as a primary source of parenting stress. This follows a 2024 declaration by the U.S. Surgeon General identifying parenting stress as a public health concern.
While the American Pediatric Association recommends limiting media use for children aged 2 to 5 to less than one hour per day and prohibiting solo media use for those aged 18 months to 2 years, many children do not meet these guidelines. Currently, 42% of children aged 2 to 4 possess their own tablets.
