Parenting styles impact adolescent academic and emotional development

Research studies have examined the impact of parenting styles on adolescent development, focusing on academic achievement and emotional regulation.

A cross-national study involving over 10,000 participants from ten Southeast European countries found that authoritative parenting is positively associated with both average grades and educational attainment. Conversely, authoritarian and permissive parenting styles were linked to negative academic outcomes. The study noted that higher levels of a country's economic development can enhance the positive effects of authoritative parenting and mitigate the negative effects of authoritarian parenting on educational attainment.

Another study focused on adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), investigating how parent-related factors contribute to youth emotion dysregulation. The research identified distinct parent profiles, noting that parents of adolescents with ADHD were more likely to exhibit moderate authoritative parenting alongside high internalizing/emotion dysregulation. While authoritative practices generally associated with less emotion dysregulation, the findings suggest that parent psychopathology and parenting practices are critical targets for interventions in neurodiverse populations.
