Parenting support initiatives address child behavior in the Netherlands
New research and community initiatives in the Netherlands are addressing challenges related to child behavior and parental support. Psychologist Suzanne de Jong-Arts has found that the self-help program ‘Aan de Slag met Druk en Opstandig Gedrag’ (Tackling Pressured and Defiant Behavior) is effective in reducing behavioral issues in children aged four to twelve. The program, which utilizes a workbook and online environment, improves parental well-being and parenting skills without requiring intensive psychological supervision, potentially easing the burden on youth care services.
In a local effort to support families, ZorgSaam Twenterand, the municipality of Twenterand, and PlayBack Theatergroep are organizing an interactive evening titled ‘In Gesprek met je puber’ (In Conversation with your Teenager) in Vriezenveen. Scheduled for November 25, 2026, the event aims to provide parents and professionals with practical communication techniques and insights to better connect with adolescents. The session will feature theatrical reenactments of common household scenarios to help participants navigate difficult conversations regarding topics such as lying, disrespect, and emotional regulation.
