Parents of Milou Verhoof launch crowdfunding for legal battle against doctors

The parents of Milou Verhoof, a 17-year-old from Bavel who died via euthanasia in October 2023, have launched a crowdfunding campaign that has raised over 30,000 euros. The funds are intended to cover the rising costs of a disciplinary procedure they have initiated against thirteen doctors.

The legal dispute follows an open letter sent in April 2024 by fourteen doctors and psychiatrists to the Public Prosecution Service. The signatories called for a criminal investigation into the circumstances of the euthanasia, questioning the mental competence of the teenager and suggesting that her parents and treating psychiatrists may have influenced her decision.

The family maintains these allegations are unfounded, noting that the signatories had no personal contact with Milou, were not involved in her treatment, and had no access to her medical records. While the Regional Euthanasia Review Committees (RTE) previously concluded that all legal due diligence requirements were met, the parents are pursuing disciplinary action against the doctors involved, excluding one who offered an apology.
