Parents of skier Matteo Franzoso accuse federations of negligence

One year after the fatal training accident of Italian skier Matteo Franzoso, his parents, Marcello and Olga Franzoso, have issued severe accusations against the FIS and the Italian Ski Federation. In an interview with ‘La Repubblica’, the parents expressed feeling abandoned and ignored by the skiing community, stating, ‘The silence of the ski world — that world in which Matteo grew up — is killing us twice.’

Franzoso died on September 15, 2025, following a crash during training in La Parva, Chile. He struck a fence after passing through a safety net, resulting in severe head injuries. While the FIS previously announced intentions to review safety measures for training events, the parents claim that no concrete steps have been taken to clarify responsibility or improve course safety.

They further alleged that the federation has failed to communicate with them for twelve months, claiming the industry has effectively ‘erased’ them. Despite various tributes during the previous season, the family maintains that the memory of their son has been lost to silence and that no meaningful changes have been implemented at the site of the accident.
