Parents prioritize children's health over personal wellbeing in new study

A study of 2,000 parents of children under 16 reveals that 75% prioritize their children’s wellbeing over their own health. Research commissioned by Bupa UK Insurance indicates that this neglect often leads to worsening medical conditions, with 71% of respondents stating that putting their health aside allowed their conditions to deteriorate.

Key findings show that half of the parents surveyed ignored their own symptoms, while 33% delayed contacting medical professionals. Specific behaviors included canceling medical appointments due to time constraints (24%), postponing screenings (20%), and delaying prescribed treatments (19%).

The pressure extends to the professional environment, where 66% of working parents avoid taking sick leave to preserve time for when their children become ill. Additionally, 58% reported continuing to work while unwell to avoid using leave already taken for childcare. Dr Naveen Puri, medical director at Bupa UK Insurance, noted that parents often feel they must balance child care with work and household duties, sometimes at the expense of their own medical needs.
