Parents report high costs of raising young children
A national poll conducted by the University of Michigan Health C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital reveals that 81% of parents believe having a baby is more expensive than it should be. Parents with children aged 0–3 are particularly affected, with 40% describing their financial situation as “struggling” or “just getting by.”
To manage these expenses, 68% of parents reported using secondhand baby clothes and equipment, 58% reduced spending on non-essentials, and 42% worked extra hours. While 96% of parents agree that early childhood development is vital for long-term health, only 59% believe supporting families with young children is a good use of taxpayer funds.
There is significant parental support for specific state-level programs. Approximately 73% of parents strongly support paid leave during pregnancy or the newborn period, 60% support assistance with formula or healthy food, and 56% support free or reduced childcare. Support for programs providing free car seats (55%) and diapers (51%) was also noted.
