Tukaram Mundhe leads Maharashtra FDA food safety crackdown

Tukaram Mundhe, the Commissioner of the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has become a central figure in the state due to his aggressive enforcement of food safety and hygiene regulations. Since taking office in May 2026, Mundhe has led widespread inspections targeting milk adulteration, illegal products, and unhygienic establishments. His recent directives include a ban on the sale of high-fat, sugar, and salt (HFSS) foods within a 50-metre radius of schools.

Mundhe’s strict approach has drawn both significant public attention and legal scrutiny. The Bombay High Court recently questioned the FDA regarding allegations of partiality during inspections of canteens within the court premises. His career is also noted for its volatility; the 2005-batch IAS officer has undergone 25 transfers during his 21-year administrative service.

In response to reports suggesting Mundhe might face a transfer, veteran actor and BJP leader Paresh Rawal has publicly urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to protect the officer. Rawal argued that officials taking a firm stand on public health should receive institutional support rather than being moved from their departments. Meanwhile, Mundhe has gained viral fame on social media, where users have dubbed him ‘Asli Singham’ for his no-nonsense enforcement style.
