Parintins Celebrates Traditional Matança do Boi Ritual of Garantido Boi-Bumbá
On Friday, 17 July, the Garantido Boi‑Bumbá performed the traditional “Matança do Boi” in the Baixa area of Parintins, Amazonas. The ceremony, preserved by the Monteverde family, marks the symbolic end of the red‑and‑white boi season after the festivities for Nossa Senhora do Carmo.
The event features a street procession where the boi, adorned with green‑wrapped piririma palm‑leaf decorations on its horns, is chased by vaqueiros, lassoed, and returned to the traditional curral for a symbolic killing. Magaly Monteverde, granddaughter of founder Lindolfo Monteverde, said the ritual is “a moment of gratitude and cultural legacy” that unites the community and honors the boi’s mythic narrative.
