Paris and Cosenza present contrasting urban planning models

Urban planning debates regarding the management of public space are highlighting contrasting models between major European capitals and Italian cities. In Paris, the municipal administration has accelerated the ‘rues aux écoles’ (school streets) program. This initiative has pedestrianized road sections directly in front of educational institutions, reclaiming over one hundred kilometers of asphalt for families and social interaction while reducing smog and summer temperatures through new greenery and drainage paving.

In contrast, Cosenza has taken a different approach to address traffic flow. The city has reopened Via Misasi to vehicular traffic and reduced the size of existing bike lanes to prioritize mobility and parking needs. This divergence reflects a broader European discussion on whether urban design should prioritize traffic fluidity or transform streets into safe, green, human-centric spaces.
