Paris authorities launch investigations into two deaths during protests
The Paris Prosecutor's Office has opened two investigations following the deaths of two men, aged 59 and 48, during unrest surrounding demonstrations on the weekend of October 17.
The first victim, a 59-year-old man, was found unconscious near the corner of Rue Château-d’Eau, an area heavily affected by violence. Despite emergency medical intervention, he passed away. The second victim, aged 48, died on Monday morning on Rue Berger after suffering a medical emergency on a public street.
At this stage, authorities have stated that no third-party responsibility is suspected, and investigations are focused on determining the exact causes of death.
The unrest has also resulted in significant law enforcement activity. According to Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin, 2,513 people were taken into custody and 123 were sent to detention following the violence. The demonstrations also led to widespread property damage and looting, affecting approximately 3,000 businesses and resulting in the burning of the Limoges city hall.
