Paris Brunner faces controversy over goal celebration
AS Monaco striker Paris Brunner has sparked controversy following a goal celebration during a 1-1 draw against RC Strasbourg in Ligue 1. After scoring a long-range equalizer in the 73rd minute, the 20-year-old German forward mimicked a throat-cutting gesture toward the home supporters.
Brunner explained that the gesture was a reaction to insults directed at his family, stating, “They were talking about my family, my mother, my father. I could see them.” He clarified that while he does not entirely regret the action, he did not intend to be disrespectful and claimed the gesture was misunderstood, intended to signify “What a goal, it’s over.”
Despite the player's explanation and a subsequent apology on Instagram, where he called the gesture “clumsy,” Brunner faces a potential suspension. If the match referee, Éric Wattellier, noted the provocative behavior in his official report, the LFP disciplinary commission may impose a ban for unsporting conduct.
