Paris court orders murder trial for driver in fatal cyclist collision
The Paris Court of Appeal has ruled that Ariel Marciano will stand trial before an assize court for murder following the death of 27-year-old cyclist Paul Varry in October 2024.
An investigating judge previously ordered the trial based on findings that Marciano intentionally struck Varry with a SUV. The defense has appealed this decision, arguing that the driver had no intention to kill and that accidentology reports do not support the claim of a deliberate attack. The defense lawyers have indicated they may appeal to the Court of Cassation.
Lawyers representing the Varry family welcomed the court's decision, describing the incident as a ‘wild murder’ committed by a dangerous individual.
