Paris explosion trial begins against city and construction firm

A criminal trial has commenced against the City of Paris and a construction company regarding a devastating gas explosion in the Rue de Trévise. The incident, which occurred nearly eight years ago, resulted in four deaths and 53 injuries.

Investigations suggest the catastrophe was triggered by a leaking sewage pipe that caused the ground to soften over several years. Although the building management was reportedly aware of the issue, it was not repaired in time, leading to a sinking sidewalk. Subsequent repair attempts failed to properly inspect or stabilize the underground soil, causing a gas line beneath the pavement to lose support and break.

The explosion damaged nine buildings and the local sewage system, leaving hundreds homeless. The deceased included two firefighters, a Spanish tourist, and a local resident. While the City of Paris reached a 20 million euro compensation agreement with victims in early 2022, the settlement did not constitute an admission of guilt. The defendants now face charges of manslaughter, bodily harm, and unintentional causation of an explosion.
