Paris Jackson reveals experience with electroconvulsive therapy

Paris Jackson, daughter of Michael Jackson, has shared intimate details regarding her mental health struggles and her experience with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Speaking on Jay Shetty’s ‘On Purpose’ podcast, the 28-year-old singer revealed she underwent nine ECT sessions over three weeks after conventional treatments and medications failed to alleviate severe depression and suicidal ideation.

Jackson described the procedure as being performed under general anesthesia, noting it is not as ‘barbaric’ as historical depictions suggest. However, she recounted significant physical and cognitive side effects, including intense head pain and memory loss. She noted that she had to replace her metal facial piercings with plastic ones for the sessions.

Her experiences have heavily influenced her upcoming sophomore album, ‘Happiest Day of My Life,’ which is set for release in August 2026. The album cover features a visual representation of her treatment, including a bite guard. Jackson, who has maintained sobriety for six years, also discussed her history of addiction and past traumatic experiences in treatment facilities.
