Paris Koukoulopoulos proposes reforms to Greek heating allowance

Paris Koukoulopoulos, PASOK's economic spokesperson and Vice President of the Parliament, has submitted a formal parliamentary question regarding the heating allowance in Greece. The move follows a Ministry of National Economy and Finance briefing that outlines increases to the allowance for the period between late 2027 and 2032, notably omitting a specific commitment for the 2026-2027 heating season.

Koukoulopoulos has proposed four key measures to address rising energy costs: 1. A significant adjustment to the allowance amount to reflect current energy prices. 2. An increase in income thresholds to prevent citizens with marginal income rises from losing eligibility. 3. A structural reform of the allowance framework to align coverage with local temperature realities and heating needs. 4. Additional special provisions for residents of Western Macedonia, utilizing the Just Transition Clause.

The inquiry is addressed to the Minister of National Economy and Finance and the Minister of Environment and Energy.
